Harris, Emily Cumming, 1836?-1925

Teacher, botanical artist. Born in Plymouth, Devonshire, in 1836 or 1837. Daughter of Edwin Harris and Sarah Hill. Came to New Zealand with her parents and siblings on the 'William Bryan', in 1841. Settled in New Plymouth, moving to Nelson on the outbreak of war in Mar 1860. Studied art in Hobart, Tasmania. Returned to Nelson. Mostly painted New Zealand flowers and trees and published three volumes of lithographs of New Zealand plants in 1890. (DNZB (Vol 2, 1870-1900, p 197)
