The first woman secretary to be appointed to a New Zealand parliamentarian. She was appointed as secretary to J G Coates in 1928 when he was Leader of the Opposition, and remained with him until Coates' death in 1943. In 1945 Helen Montague married Mr J N Massey (a former MP for Franklin). Daughter of James Frederic and Sarah Sissions Montague. The name on her father's will is Helen Winifred Isabel Montague (1939).
