Turnbull, A H, 1868-1918

Born in Wellington, New Zealand on 14 September 1868. Merchant, bibliophile, and collector who amassed the largest private library in New Zealand at the time, consisting of over 55,000 books, and also thousands of paintings, drawings, prints, maps, pamphlets, manuscripts, periodicals and newspapers. After his death in 1918 and bequest of his collection to the Crown, the Alexander Turnbull Library was established in 1920.
