It formed the lower portion of the central pillar supporting the roof of Rangihaeata's house on Mana Island, the house being known as Kaitangata. Description: Two women seated and weaving, their work stretched on on sticks on the ground. Kete hanging from the walls of the whare and food parcels hanging down from the ceiling, along with a large bundle of dried flax. A small fire burns outside the whare. Description: The man has full moko on his face, short curly hair and an ear adornment. Beyond him are parallel fence lines, possibly indicating the two sides of a path or track rising up a low hill to the left and a small European-style house is on a low rise in the left background. Tall hills and a sunset or sunrise sky in the background. Several of White's other known watercolours are copies and this too could be a copy. It is the same as A-114-041, a watercolour by an unknown artist. It resembles several of Angas's lithographs, but is not an exact copy of any of them. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Fred. J. Description: Shows full-length figure of Hongi Hongi (a.k.a. Nga Toki), wearing mats or blankets, a greenstone earring, and holding a greenstone mere in his right hand. He stands before the posts of the pa enclosure at Ngahuruhuru Pa, four miles from Otawhao. Angas visited New Zealand in 1844. This is a redrawing of his lithograph Hongi Hongi, plate 11 in his The New Zealanders illustrated (London, 1847). The copyist is probably H. W. Kirkwood One of four lithographs on one sheet, all copies of work by Angas and probably all copied by Kirkwood.
