Whitmore, George Stoddart (Sir), 1829-1903

Soldier, military leader, Hawke's Bay runholder, politician. Major General, Commander of the Forces; afterwards Colonial Secretary. Commanded Napier militia from 1863 as Major. With the renewed fighting, led Colonial force in Hawke's Bay. After 1866, very involved in war, led seven campaigns. Led Napier militia against Hauhau force. In 1868 organised pursuit against Te Kooti. Reputed to have had an `awesome capacity to inspire dislike'. Born 30 May 1829 in Malta.
