Mackenzie, Thomas Noble (Rt Hon Sir), 1853-1930

Storekeeper, explorer, conservationist, politician, marketing agent, prime minister, diplomat. Knighted in 1916. Was in in Balclutha, 1881-1887, elected to MHR (Member of House of Representatives) in 1887. Helped open up the Milford Track and found the Mackenzie Pass leading to Dusky Sound. Had a hut, known as "Kintail Castle" in the Tahakopa area (see photographs in McWhannell Album 1 (PA1-o-550, p.17, 20-21). Made a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1898. Husband of Ida Henrietta (née Nantes). Generally associated with the Otago-Southland regions. See DNZB (Vol 3, 1901-1920, p303-304, M18).
