Banks, Joseph (Sir), 1743-1820

Naturalist and patron of science. Accompanied Captain James Cook on his first voyage aboard the Endeavour, visiting New Zealand in 1769. He assembled natural history collections and made scientific observations. On his return to London in 1771 he became the centre of scientific enquiry and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society.
