Rongowhakaata leader, prophet, religious founder; Te Kooti experienced religious revelations during imprisonment on the Chatham Islands. He escaped and returned to the mainland, where he and his followers were pursued by colonial forces; eventually they took refuge in the King Country, where Te Kooti remained until pardoned in 1883. During this period, Te Kooti laid the principles for the Ringatu Church; a detailed biography of Te Kooti, Redemption songs, has been written by Judith Binney.
