Clerk, commercial traveller, shopkeeper, politician, prime minister. In 1906 he married Lotty May (née Eaton, d 1961). Labour Member of Parliament for Hutt 1929-1968; Minister of Finance 1935-1949; Leader of the Opposition 1950-1957; Prime Minister 1957-1960. Personal papers held at Archives New Zealand.
