There is an index at the end of the volume. The volume contains a copy of a letter written by J C Andersen in 1956, which explains the context of the letters and this volume. Quantity: 1 volume(s). Physical Description: Typescript (34 cm; ½ blue calf) Provenance: The original letters were given to J C Andersen, by Crompton Smith. According to a copy of a letter laid into this volume, from Andersen to the then Chief Librarian of the Turnbull Clyde Taylor, Andersen had organised for this copy of the transcriptions of the letters to be added to the Turnbull Library collection. Probably when Andersen was himself the Chief Librarian.

Description: A cadastral map of rural and suburban sections open for sale and selection of the area from Lake Horowhenua to Koputuroa Road, and bounded by the Kawiu and Makomako Roads. This cadastral map has numbered sections, some coloured, and include acreages and owners' names handwritten in some sections. The Wellington - Manawatu Railway is marked as are a school and a waterworks reserve. Streets and the Koputuroa Stream are named. The base maps are of sections in the Blocks I, II & VI, Waiopehu Survey District. Sections marked with red are large settlements open for sale or selection and are referred to in a key. Schedule of the suburban sections and rural lands in this district include the section number, acreage, value and rent. Terms and conditions of sale or selection of the Levin village settlement include the statement 'Drawn by F.J. Hales'. Includes a written description of rural land and the application date of 18 March 1889 at the Crown Lands Office, Wellington and includes J.W.A. Marchant's name. There is also a covering note signed by W H S (W H Skinner) on the provenance of the ms with a genealogy of Teira Whatakore attached. Also includes letter from T M Hocken to Smith, Dunedin 1 Jun 1893, forwarding books and precis of copies or extracts of Colonial Office material, Sep 1835, on the `Alligator' and J Guard affair. The manuscript gives a biographical account of Wiremu Kingi Matakatea, with whakapapa, with much information about his role in conflicts between Taranaki and other iwi, and between Taranaki and the Government in the first Taranaki campaign (1860) in the New Zealand wars; the document also discusses the shipwreck `Harriet' and the treatment received by the survivors; there are also translations of the material. Description: Photographs of aspects of Easter Island, particularly views of various tablets covered in Rongorongo (hieroglyphics relating to the Rapanui language). One image is a copy of a painting showing Easter Islanders wearing ceremonial head-dress in front of statues; one shows a man with two young boys; and there are views of carved figures and implements. Most of the images show the Rongorongo on different stone tablets. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Maurice Crompton Smith was the son of Stephenson Percy Smith who visited Easter Island about 1903. Pencilled notes are written in Stephenson Percy Smith's hand-writing. A brief note inside the album states that some of the hieroglyphic stones are now lost, and there is no known deciphering.
