Description

Lower mast and lower yard of Pai Marire Niu pole. Photograph taken at Maraekowhai, on the upper reaches of the Whanganui River, in 1905 by Sir Maui Pomare (1875?-1930).

Inscriptions: Verso - centre - The last Niu - photo by the Hon Sir Maui Pomare. This last remaining relic of the Pai Marire worship was standing at Maraekowhai on the upper Whanganui River (53 miles above Pipiriki) when Sir Maui Pomare photographed in in 1905. It is the lower mast of a niu, or Hauhau sacred pole, with the lower yard. In Cowan NZ Wars v2 p43
