Tilly, Thomas Capel, 1830-1900
Lieutenant, Royal Navy. On being paid off in 1861, took command of the second Melanesian Mission vessel, the Southern Cross and made several voyages to the Melanesian islands; re-wrote the navigation system for that area. From 1866, commanded several immigrant vessels to New Zealand, and also acted as agent for the Melanesian Mission in Auckland. Commissioned and responsible for construction of Southern Cross III in 1873. Founded a navigation school in Auckland and edited `New Zealand and south Pacific pilot' from 1881
