Isaac Coates is only known to have represented his subjects using a head-and-shoulders profile portrait style. His artistic career began before the advent of photography, when silhouettes were a popular form of representation.
Profile silhouette portraits feature in the delicate paper cuts made by Wellington artist John Callaghan. In this illustrated session John, in discussion with Paul Diamond, will talk about his work and how his paper cuts are made.
The speakers
John Callaghan, Wellington artist, whose latest exhibition Papercut Proverbs is on display at the Solander Gallery until 23 February; Paul Diamond, Curator of the exhibition.
Places are limited, please book by emailing Cellia Joe or phoning 04 462 3935.
Part of the Turnbull Gallery exhibition, Head and shoulders: Portraits of Māori by Isaac Coates.
