The conquerers' smiles

Eighteen years after their conquest of Mount Everest, Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund visited Wellington on a fundraising tour for the Himalaya Trust.

The events of 1953 had changed both: the yak herder's son had acquired international fame and the beekeeper had become the first to cross Antarctica. Both were committed actively to the welfare of the people of the lands in which they had found fame.
